The Texas Instruments MSP430 family of ultralow-power microcontrollers consists of a number of components with varied peripherals geared toward different applications. In portable measurement applications, the architecture and five low power modes are optimized to extend battery life. A potent 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and constant generators are all included in the device, which contribute to its high level of code efficiency. In less than 6 s, the digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) enables wake-up from low-power modes to active mode.
The ultralow-power mixed signal MSP430x11x2 and MSP430x12x2 series microcontrollers have fourteen or twenty-two I/O pins, a built-in 16-bit timer, a 10-bit A/D converter with an integrated reference, and a data transfer controller (DTC). Additionally, the MSP430x12x2 series microcontrollers come with built-in synchronous (SPI) and asynchronous (UART) communication capabilities.
Effective system solutions, including glass breakage detection with signal analysis, are made possible by digital signal processing with the 16-bit RISC performance (including wave digital filter algorithm). The use of standalone RF sensors is another area of application.
